Although the Canadian comedy legend passed away in 1994 at just 43 years old, his legacy continues to live on in the hearts of fans around the world.
Over three decades later, a new documentary titled «John Candy: I Like Me» celebrates his life and career. Directed by Colin Hanks and produced by Ryan Reynolds, who proudly calls himself a «superfan», - the film combines never-before-seen footage with heartfelt testimonials from Candy’s children, Jennifer and Christopher, whom he shared with his wife Rosemary Margaret Hobor.
Their voices create an intimate portrait of Candy’s influence on Hollywood and the generations of fans he continues to inspire. «When you hear the name John Candy, your face lights up», - said Hanks and Reynolds in a joint statement. «He was not only a great actor, but an even better person. People loved his ordinary qualities, but didn’t know how accessible John was. He went through the same struggles as all of us, we’re just talking about it now. We are incredibly honored to have gotten to know the man better through this process and bring the real John Candy to audiences».

«John Candy: I Like Me» had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 4, 2025, serving as the opening film for the festival’s 50th anniversary edition.
The documentary will be available for viewing on Prime Video worldwide starting October 10, 2025.
When the project was first announced in 2022, Reynolds told fans to «expect tears».
John passed away in his sleep from a heart attack on March 4, 1994, while filming «Wagons East» in Durango, Mexico. He was 43 years old and had publicly spoken about living with anxiety and panic attacks.
His children, Jennifer and Christopher Candy, play a significant role in the new documentary film. They were co-producers of the film and share personal testimonials in the story, alongside their mother, Rosemary Margaret Hobor
