The tragic story of Gabby Petito has made it to the big screen as her case has been turned into a documentary film. The story of the late influencer gained widespread attention in 2021 when she embarked on a cross-country trip with her fiancé Brian Laundrie. Her death was ruled a homicide, and Brian was named a person of interest before later taking his own life.
According to USA Today, Netflix noted: «The series captures the reality of a young woman caught in abusive relationships behind closed doors, even as she presented a happy, 'insta-perfect' face for social media». The documentary film aims to shed light on the dangers of domestic violence and draw attention to the victims in such situations.
Although Gabby’s case sparked major online discussions, find out how to watch the documentary film and learn more about her story below.
The documentary film was released on Monday, February 17, 2025. Gabby’s family was actively involved in the project, continuing their work in raising awareness about domestic violence through the Gabby Petito Foundation.
Speaking with Netflix about keeping Gabby’s story alive, her father, Joe Petito, shared: «Even in public, people come up to you and just hug you… You know where it’s coming from. I am a product of domestic violence. Tara [his wife, Gabby’s stepmother] experienced domestic violence in previous relationships. When you don’t understand or know where to turn when these situations arise, hearing something like Gabby’s story opens your eyes. We’re doing this to get this information out to as many people as possible because many don’t know where to turn when they find themselves in such a situation».
The three-part documentary series is available for viewing on Netflix. The episodes are titled «We Bought a Van», - «Where's Gabby?» and «Burn After Reading».
This is not the first documentary film about Gabby’s case. Other platforms, including Lifetime and Tubi, have also worked on projects based on her story, highlighting different aspects of the investigation and its impact
