The new documentary series Investigation Discovery «Unmasking a Monster: Aileen Wuornos» reveals details that cast doubt on the serial killer Aileen Wuornos’s self-defense argument. In an exclusive excerpt presented by Us, Wuornos claims that during her interaction with one of her victims, Peter Siems, she pulled out a gun, stating, «I don’t want to shoot you». She added that he tried to take the weapon from her, and then she «pulled it out» and immediately shot him.
However, Wuornos later admitted that she was «going through his things» and found religious items. At this moment, Detective David Taylor, who worked on the case and participates in the series, informed her that Siems was a missionary, which greatly upset Wuornos. Taylor noted that this was «a very telling moment» for understanding her psychology, adding that killing someone who was «a man of God» affected her. He also emphasized that her story of self-defense is not credible.
According to Taylor, Siems had been «a man of God for many decades», - and his family claimed that he was always ready to help those in need. To date, the body of Peter Siems has not been found.
Wuornos, who was a sex worker at the time of the murders, claimed that all the killings were committed in self-defense after attacks or sexual advances from the victims. She committed her first murder in November 1989, killing Richard Mallory. She later killed several other men, including David Spears and Walter Geno Antonio.
Wuornos was sentenced to death on January 31, 1992, for the murder of Mallory and later confessed to other murders. She was executed on October 9, 2002, at the age of 46. The premiere of the series «Unmasking a Monster: Aileen Wuornos» will take place on September 30 from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM Eastern Time and will be available for streaming on HBO Max.
