Dolores Huerta is recognized as a strong leader in the labor movement and a civil rights activist, but recently her name has become known for another reason. In March 2026, renewed attention to Cesar Chavez, who passed away in 1993, sparked controversy as allegations of sexual assault against him emerged. As one of Chavez’s closest former associates, Huerta’s statements have drawn new attention to Chavez’s legacy.

Learn more about Huerta, her connection to Chavez, and the controversy surrounding him below.

Huerta is a 96-year-old American activist and community organizer, best known for her work advocating for the rights of agricultural workers. She was born on April 10, 1930, in New Mexico and became a powerful voice in the fight for better working conditions and fair pay. For several decades, Huerta helped organize strikes, negotiate labor contracts, and support social justice initiatives, particularly for Latino workers and communities.

The civil rights leader is also known for coining the slogan «Sí, se puede», - which became a rallying cry for activists across the country.

Huerta’s dedication to advocating for workers' rights has earned her numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Huerta worked with Chavez as a co-founder of the United Farm Workers (UFW) union. Together, they created one of the most influential labor movements in U.S. history, organizing agricultural workers in the 1960s and 1970s. While Chavez often served as the public face of the movement, Huerta played a key role behind the scenes, negotiating major labor agreements.

The partnership between Huerta and Chavez was central to the success of the UFW, but she soon came forward with allegations of sexual assault against her former colleague.

In a statement on March 18, 2026, Huerta accused Chavez of forcing her to have sex with him in one instance and raping her in another.

«I am almost 96 years old, and for the last 60 years, I have kept this secret because I believed that revealing the truth would harm the farmworker movement I have fought for my entire life», - Huerta began her statement. «I have always encouraged people to use their voice. After the years-long investigation by the New York Times into sexual harassment by Cesar Chavez, I can no longer remain silent and must share my experience».

Huerta recalled how, as a young mother in the 1960s, she experienced «two separate sexual encounters with Chavez».

«The first time I was manipulated and forced to have sex with him, and I didn’t feel I could say 'no' because he was someone I admired, my boss, and the leader of the movement to which I had already dedicated years of my life», - her statement read. «The second time I was coerced, against my will, in a situation where I felt trapped».

Huerta also shared that she became pregnant as a result of Chavez’s sexual assault. She arranged for her children to live with other families.

«I had already experienced violence and sexual violence before, and I convinced myself that I needed to endure these incidents alone and in secret», - she continued. «Both sexual encounters with Chavez resulted in pregnancies. I decided to keep my pregnancies a secret and, after giving birth, arranged for them to be raised by other families who could provide them with a stable life».

In 2026, renewed attention to Chavez sparked debates about his leadership and personal conduct. As new details continue to emerge, the controversy has prompted other activists and the public to rethink Chavez’s legacy in the farmworker movement.

As Huerta noted in her statement, the New York Times reported that Chavez manipulated and sexually assaulted girls.
