President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Scott Bessent as his nominee for Secretary of the Treasury.

In his statement, Trump praised Bessent, a financial consultant and major donor to his 2024 election campaign, calling him «widely respected as one of the world’s leading international investors and strategists in geopolitics and economics».

Trump continued to describe Bessent’s journey as an «American dream» and highlighted his strong support for the «America First» program. On the eve of America’s 250th anniversary, Trump stated that Bessent will help usher in a new era for the United States, strengthening their global economic position and ensuring that the dollar remains the world’s reserve currency.

Concluding his statement, Trump promised that together they will «make America rich, prosperous, accessible, and, most importantly, great again».

More detailed information about Bessent’s financial position and career can be found below.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Bessent has a fortune of $ 1 billion.

Bessent, 62, is currently the founder of the macro-investment firm Key Square Group.

Originally from South Carolina, Bessent earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Yale University in 1984 before starting his career in finance. In 1991, he joined Soros Fund Management (SFM), where he became a partner in the 1990s and later held the position of head of the London office. Bessent gained widespread recognition for betting against the British pound, which brought SFM $ 1 billion. (He repeated this success in 2013 by betting against the Japanese yen, bringing additional profits.)

After leaving SFM in 2000, Bessent founded a $ 1 billion hedge fund, which closed in 2005. He then worked as a senior investment advisor at Protégé Partners, a fund of funds firm. Bessent returned to SFM in 2011 as Chief Investment Officer, a position he held until 2015. In 2015, he left to start his own firm, Key Square Group.

Bessent is married to former New York prosecutor John Freeman, and they have two children together.

If confirmed by the Senate, he will become the first openly gay Secretary of the Treasury and the second openly gay member of the cabinet, after Pete Buttigieg
