President Donald Trump has once again found himself at the center of controversy after using anti-transgender slurs against Democratic Senate candidate Annie Andrews in South Carolina. In a post on the social media platform TruthSocial on October 5, Trump wrote: «Annie 'Tranny' Andrews is running against our wonderful Darlin Graham for the Senate in South Carolina».
Trump continued, stating that Darlin Graham is a «high-quality person», - while Andrews, according to him, does not align with the values of South Carolinians. He also claimed that Andrews supports «transgenderism for all, open borders, defunding the police, high taxes, and a weak military», - which is a common attack from Trump on Democratic opponents without any evidence.
In response to Trump’s post, Andrews released a statement emphasizing that she fights for her patients and children, as well as for improving the lives of families in South Carolina. She noted that her campaign is focused on addressing issues that families face, such as high grocery prices and access to quality healthcare.
The White House, commenting on the situation, referred to Trump’s post. According to her campaign, Andrews, who is a physician, had previously stated that she does not support access to gender-affirming surgery for minors or the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports.
Trump’s attack comes amid record-low approval ratings and concerns among Republican politicians regarding the upcoming midterm elections. According to a poll conducted by the conservative Trafalgar Group, Andrews and her Republican opponent are in close competition.
Following Trump’s post, politicians from both sides condemned his remarks. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called Trump’s attacks on Andrews «despicable», - noting that she is a mother and pediatrician who has always prioritized the interests of her community. Former South Carolina Governor David Beasley also criticized the president, urging voters to reject a politics of division and hate.
