President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Scott Bessent as his choice for the next Secretary of the Treasury.
In his statement, Trump praised Bessent, a financial consultant and major donor to Trump’s 2024 campaign, calling him «widely respected as one of the world’s leading investors and geopolitical and economic strategists».
Trump continued to describe Bessent’s journey as «the American dream» and highlighted his strong support for the «America First» program. On the eve of America’s 250th anniversary, Trump stated that Bessent will help usher in a new era for the United States, strengthening its global economic position and ensuring that the US dollar remains the world’s reserve currency.
Concluding his statement, Trump promised that together they will «make America rich, prosperous, accessible, and, most importantly, great again».
Learn more about Bessent’s personal life, who, if confirmed by the Senate, will become the first openly gay Secretary of the Treasury and the second openly gay cabinet member, after Pete Buttigieg.
Bessent, 62, currently resides in his home state of South Carolina with his husband John Freeman, a former prosecutor from New York.
Yes, the couple has two children — both sons.
In 2015, Bessent told a Yale University alumni magazine: «If you had told me in 1984, when we graduated from college, and people were dying of AIDS, that in 30 years I would be legally married and we would have two children through surrogacy, I wouldn’t have believed it».
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Bessent’s net worth is $ 1 billion.
Bessent is currently the founder of the macro investment firm Key Square Group.
Originally from South Carolina, Bessent earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Yale University in 1984 before starting his career in finance. In 1991, he joined Soros Fund Management (SFM), where he became a partner in the 1990s and later served as head of the London office. Bessent gained widespread recognition for betting against the British pound, which earned SFM $ 1 billion. (He repeated this success in 2013, betting against the Japanese yen, which brought additional profits.)
After leaving SFM in 2000, Bessent founded a $ 1 billion hedge fund, which closed in 2005. He then worked as a senior investment consultant at Protégé Partners, a fund of funds. In 2011, Bessent returned to SFM as Chief Investment Officer, a position he held until 2015. He left in 2015 to start his own firm, Key Square Group
