President Donald Trump expressed his concerns about a recent outbreak of plague-like illnesses in Russia. In response to a journalist’s question about the situation in the country, asked on October 5 at the White House, Trump stated that he is worried but has not yet had the chance to discuss the matter with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump noted that it is a case of pneumonic plague, adding that it is a serious disease that had previously been manageable. According to him, «the microbes have become stronger and smarter», - and «things that used to help with pneumonia are not working as effectively now». He also stated that the U.S. is ready to assist Russia in this situation.
These comments came amid reports that an employee of the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute died from «pneumonia of unclear origin». The region’s governor, Igor Kobtsev, reported that no microorganisms related to her professional activities were found in the woman’s body. A quarantine was imposed in one of the hospitals, and nearly 200 people who had contact with the deceased are under medical observation. Kobtsev added that at the time of publication, no new cases of the disease had been recorded.
A representative of the U.S. State Department stated that many details of the situation have yet to be confirmed and urged Russian authorities to share accurate information. Senator Marco Rubio also commented on the situation, noting that there are concerns about the potential spread of the infection, but at the same time emphasized that this is not a cause for panic.
