Donald Trump broke his silence after an attempt on his life at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, over the weekend. Following the incident on Saturday, July 13, the 78-year-old president expressed gratitude to the Secret Service and law enforcement officers who helped him after the assassination attempt.

«I want to thank the United States Secret Service and all law enforcement for their quick response to the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania», - Trump wrote in his statement. «First and foremost, I want to express my condolences to the family of the person who died at the rally, as well as the family of another person who was seriously injured».

Shortly before the shooting, authorities identified the deceased person as Cory Comperatore.

«It's incredible that something like this can happen in our country», - added Trump. «I was wounded by a bullet that pierced the upper right part of my ear. I immediately felt that something was wrong when I heard a whistle, shots, and felt the bullet breaking through the skin».

At the end of his statement, the politician noted that he «understood… what was happening» to him when he was hit by the bullet, and «there was a lot of bleeding».

Trump was holding his campaign rally on July 13 at a farm in Butler, where his ear was grazed by a bullet. The shooter was identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks.

President Joe Biden expressed his gratitude for Trump’s safety and well-being through social media, writing: «I am grateful that he is safe and feeling well. I pray for him and his family, as well as for everyone who was at the rally, as we await further information. Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for saving him. There is no place for such violence in America. We must come together as one nation to condemn this».

Additionally, Biden addressed the nation from the Oval Office in a televised speech, emphasizing that Americans «cannot allow this violence to become the norm», - despite their political differences.

«Here in America, we need to step out of our echo chambers, where we only listen to those we agree with, where misinformation is rampant, where foreign actors stoke the flames of our division to shape outcomes that serve their interests, not ours», - added Biden. «The political rhetoric in this country has become very heated. It’s time to cool it down. We all have a responsibility to do so»
