Donald Trump was denied a request for a sentencing delay in his default court case. Just two months after his election as president, the 78-year-old Republican was sentenced at a hearing where he appeared virtually. Trump denies any criminal activity and thanked the Supreme Court for its «time and effort» in «trying to correct the great injustice done [to him]» in a post on Truth Social on Thursday, January 9, 2025.

«Every lawyer has unequivocally stated that this case should never have been brought. There were no legitimate charges against me», - Trump claimed in his post. «In other words, I am innocent of all fabricated, false charges by the judge. This was nothing more than a weapon of our justice system against a political opponent. This is called a legal war, and nothing like this has ever happened in the United States of America, and it should never happen again. So far, this high-level political and corrupt judge has imposed a ban on my speeches, depriving me of my First Amendment right to speak about very important aspects of the case. In the name and sanctity of the presidency, I will appeal this case and am confident that JUSTICE WILL PREVAIL. The dismal, dying remnants of the witch hunt against me will not distract us as we unite and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!»

Find out when Trump’s sentencing will take place, how to watch it, and much more below.

Trump was sentenced because he was found guilty in May 2024 of falsifying business records so that his former lawyer Michael Cohen could reimburse over $ 100,000 to adult actress Stormy Daniels to prevent her from publicly disclosing her alleged affair with Trump before the 2016 presidential elections. Last year, Daniels testified in court about the alleged sexual advances he made towards her, which Trump denied.

Three liberal Supreme Court judges — Ketanji Brown Jackson, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan — opposed Trump’s request for a sentencing delay. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett agreed, while other conservative judges — Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh — noted that they would have granted Trump’s request, CNN reported.

The sentencing took place on Friday, January 10.

Trump’s sentencing began at 9:30 a.m. local time on January 10.

Several news stations broadcast the sentencing live, including CNN, ABC News, PBS, CNN, and others.

No, Judge Merchant did not impose any punishment on Trump during the sentencing hearing. This outcome finalizes Trump’s sentencing, but it will not prevent him from returning to the White House, according to the Associated Press
