Former gang leader Dwayne «Keefe D» Davis has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder of rapper Tupac Shakur. Prosecutors argued that he orchestrated the musician’s killing several decades ago.

In August, jurors found Davis, 63, guilty of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon following a two-week trial in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to NBC News. At a hearing on October 13, Judge Carly Kearney told Davis, «You do not have the right to take a person away from their family». She added that «you cannot just take a person’s life, especially when that person is Tupac Shakur».

Tupac Shakur died six days after being shot in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996. He was 25 years old. Members of Shakur’s family were present in court, including his sister Sekyiwa «Set» Shakur, who noted that «he would have been a promise to our parents» and that «when you take someone’s life, you deserve the maximum punishment».

Davis learned of his sentence more than 30 years after Shakur’s death. Prosecutors accused him of orchestrating the rapper’s murder in response to a conflict involving Shakur, Marion «Suge» Knight, co-founder of Death Row Records, and Davis’s nephew Orlando Anderson. On the night of the conflict, Shakur and Knight were attending a boxing match between Mike Tyson and Bruce Seldon at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

After the incident, Shakur was shot four times while riding in a car with Knight. The shooting was reportedly carried out from a white Cadillac. In court, Davis only spoke about wanting to retrieve personal items seized by police in connection with his arrest.

To date, no one has been convicted for the shooting that led to Shakur’s death, and Davis is the only one found guilty in this case. He had previously denied his guilt. In his memoir «Compton Street Legend», - Davis mentioned his connections to Shakur’s murder, referring to himself as a «shotcaller» for the South Side Crips. Prosecutors presented excerpts from the memoir during his trial.

After his conviction in August, Davis stated that he intends to appeal the decision, according to the Associated Press. His attorney, Michael Sanft, previously claimed that «there is no evidence that Davis ever ordered a hit».
