Former gang leader Dwayne «Keefe D» Davis has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder of rap legend Tupac Shakur, committed 30 years ago. The sentence was handed down in a Las Vegas court on October 13, a month after his conviction.
Before the sentencing, prosecutor Mark DiGiacomo stated that Davis did not deserve the minimum punishment due to his criminal history. He emphasized that Davis deserved the maximum penalty for his actions and behavior. Davis’s attorney, Michael Saft, indicated that they intend to appeal the sentence, regardless of its length, but requested a 40-year prison term.
During the hearing, the court heard impact statements from Tupac’s sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, and his half-brother, Mopreme Shakur. Judge Carly Kyerney, addressing Davis, noted that he had no right to take a person’s life, especially when it came to Tupac Shakur.
At the end of August, a Las Vegas jury found the 63-year-old Davis guilty of orchestrating the shooting that resulted in Tupac’s fatal injuries. The murder occurred on September 7, 1996, when Tupac left a Mike Tyson boxing match and was in a black BMW with Suge Knight when they were attacked from a white Cadillac. Tupac was shot four times and died six days later in the hospital.
According to The L.A. Times, prosecutors claimed that Davis organized the murder and acquired the weapon used in the shooting as revenge for the beating of his nephew Orlando Anderson. Chief Deputy District Attorney Binu Pala told jurors that Davis could not let this go unanswered and gathered his crew to «hunt» Tupac or Knight.
Davis had previously spoken about Tupac’s death, releasing the book «Compton Street Legend» in 2019. His attorney, Anthony Saft, argued in court that the stories Davis told in interviews and in his book were fabricated, and that «the state wants you to believe this was a confession».
