Two democratic lawmakers, Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman, were shot in different locations between Friday evening, June 13, and Saturday morning, June 14. As details of their case unfold, read on to find out what happened to them, as well as more about the suspect.

Hortman, 55, was the Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives. She represented District 34B in Minnesota and was a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party of Minnesota (DFL).

In addition to her political career, Hortman was a mother of two children and was married to her husband, Mark Hortman.

Hoffman was a 60-year-old member of the Minnesota Senate. Like Hortman, Hoffman was a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party of Minnesota (DFL) and represented District 34.

Hortman and Hoffman were shot in different locations in Champlin and Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, in what appears to be a related incident, according to Fox 9. Their respective spouses were also injured, according to various sources.

Local police in Champlin and Brooklyn Park have the full resources of the state of Minnesota behind them.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz confirmed through X that he «activated the State Emergency Operations Center» and that «local police in Champlin and Brooklyn Park have the full resources of the state of Minnesota behind them».

«We are closely monitoring the situation and will share more information soon», - Walz added.

A shelter-in-place was declared in Brooklyn Park, and local police informed residents not to open the door to any officer unless there are two officers together, or to call 911 to confirm the officer’s identity at the door.

Walz confirmed that Hortman and her husband were killed, and Hoffman and his wife were injured.

The suspect’s identity has not yet been established. The only known details about the shooter are that he posed as a police officer and, according to Fox 9, the suspect is a white male with chestnut hair, wearing a black bulletproof vest, a blue shirt, and blue pants.
