UFC 316: Dvalishvili vs O’Malley 2 ended with an unexpected defeat for one fighter and a huge victory for another. Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili fought for the welterweight champion title, as did female fighters Kayla Harrison and Julianna Pena. See the results of UFC 316 below.
The winner of the Dvalishvili vs O’Malley match was Dvalishvili. The Georgian MMA fighter, known as «The Machine», is now the welterweight champion.
It is unclear when O’Malley’s next fight will take place. The former welterweight champion stated that the most important thing for him was to defeat Dvalishvili at UFC 316 during the press conference. He discussed the previous fight with Dvalishvili, which he and journalists recognized as a close fight.
«But it doesn’t matter if the fight was close if you lost», - O’Malley said. «I plan for this fight not to be so close».
After his defeat in the battle against Dvalishvili, O’Malley admitted that he did not think the fight «would go like that», calling his opponent a «jerk».
The women’s welterweight champion became Harrison, who defeated Pena, who almost did not make it to the fight in this weight class. Harrison barely made the weight mark for the championship, but she reached 135 pounds on the scales. Since weight loss was a challenge for the fighter, Harrison said at the press conference after the fight that she «would cut off her leg to get to this fight».
«There are moments in life when you have a choice, right? You can say, 'I give up', or you can stand up for yourself, and Thursday night was definitely one of those moments for me when I really wanted to be somewhere else on Earth than in that sauna», - Harrison noted, adding, «I'm not going to sugarcoat it, it’s awful. It’s not pretty, but it’s in those moments that your true character shows, and you forge, and I was forged in fire, literally. [UFC President] Dana [White] and I joked about it — I might be indestructible. You can’t kill me, I’m like a cockroach, you can’t get rid of me. And again, I give all this to God. He made me a strong weapon»
