The ex-wife of second gentleman Doug Emhoff, Kerstin, came out in support of Vice President Kamala Harris as a co-parent after she faced sexist attacks for not having children of her own. Former vice presidential candidate for Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, notably criticized Democratic politicians, including Harris, for not having their own children.
During a 2021 interview with Tucker Carlson, Vance made comments about Harris, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, calling them «a bunch of childless cat ladies who are unhappy in their lives». Buttigieg is the father of twins born in 2021. After Vance, who has three children himself, was chosen as Trump’s vice president, a video of his complaint resurfaced, and many people responded to his comments.
Kerstin came out in support of the vice president in a statement to CNN on Thursday, July 25. «These are baseless attacks. For over 10 years, since Cole and Ella were teenagers, Kamala has been a co-parent with Doug and me», - she said. «She is loving, caring, fiercely protective, and always there. I love our blended family and am grateful to her for it».
Kerstin and Doug were married from 1992 to 2008, and as mentioned, they have two children who are now adults. Harris married an entertainment lawyer in 2014, and it is noted that her stepchildren call her «Momala». Since Harris ran for president, her family has been very supportive of her.
Ella Emhoff, Harris’s stepdaughter, shared a screenshot of support for the vice president from Charlie XCX, where she called Harris a «troublemaker», - on her Instagram story. After this post, she also shared a link to register to vote. «You already know the time has come. Now is not the time to sit back and shirk responsibility. It is up to all of us to show up, act, and vote for our future. We can be the change we want to see», - she wrote, expressing support for her Momala
