Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, 39, began serving an 11-year prison sentence for multiple counts of fraud on May 30, 2023, and she has two children with her husband William «Billy» Evans. Elizabeth founded the healthcare company Theranos in 2003, which quickly gained fame for creating a blood test that was claimed to require only a small amount of blood. The Silicon Valley-based company grew and received investments for many years before announcing a partnership with Walgreens in 2013. In 2015, The Wall Street Journal began publishing investigative articles about the company and revealed that the blood tests were inaccurate. Following the discovery, the company faced legal issues related to false tests and was stripped of certain medical practices.
During Theranos' existing problems, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charged Elizabeth and former company president Ramesh Balwani, who is also her ex-husband, with defrauding $ 700 million through false advertising in 2018. Theranos agreed to settle for half a million dollars on fraud charges, according to an SEC press release. Between 2016 and 2018 (when the company announced its closure), hundreds of Theranos employees were laid off. Elizabeth began her trial on charges of wire fraud and conspiracy on September 8 through ABC News and was found guilty of four out of 11 fraud cases for statements made to investors and patients, including three cases of wire fraud and one case of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
During all the controversy surrounding Theranos, Elizabeth got engaged and married to hotel heir William «Billy» Evans in 2019. Now, as they continue their marriage under different circumstances, Elizabeth broke her silence about her imprisonment in an interview for People, published on February 12, 2025, saying: «The people I love most have to leave when I stand here, imprisoned, and my reality sinks in». As previously mentioned, Billy Evans' grandparents were the founders of the Evans hotel group in the San Diego area. Anne and William D. Evans founded the hotel company in 1953. William D. passed away in 1984, and the couple’s two eldest children, Grace Evans Cheragor and William L. Evans, took on leadership roles, according to the company’s website. Billy does not work in the hotel group. His only public social media profile is his LinkedIn, which indicates that he graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) in 2015. His last job listed in the profile was as a special projects manager at Luminar Technology from February 2017 to January 2019. Elizabeth and William began dating in 2017 and got married in 2019 in a secret wedding. They welcomed their son William Holmes Evans in July 2021, and their second child was born in late 2022 or early 2023, but the gender and birth date of this infant have not been disclosed yet.
Although both of their social media accounts are private, Vanity Fair journalist Nick Bilton posted screenshots from Billy’s social media, including one where he wrote a sweet birthday message to Elizabeth. «Happy birthday to my best friend. Last year was the best in my life», - he wrote.
Billy and the Theranos founder met at a party in the Bay Area in 2017, according to The New York Post. They got engaged in 2019, and invitations were sent out shortly after. Billy showed his love to the former CEO by giving her a MIT signet ring, a colleague told The Post. «Billy and the MIT ring, they’re inseparable. He always wore it on his pinky», - the colleague said. «He could have instantly gotten a AAA-class diamond engagement ring if he wanted. But if you give her some extravagant ring, it might end up in federal custody if she has to give up her material possessions»
