Elizabeth Holmes was one of the most widely recognized innovators in the world. In the early 2000s, she established herself as an inspiration for women in the field of technology and science — but everything changed when she was found guilty of fraud. Holmes' company, Theranos, promised to provide accurate blood test results using their Edison device, which required just a drop of blood from a finger prick. However, journalists and other investigators eventually uncovered the truth about Theranos. Ultimately, the healthcare industry was left in a lurch by the company’s lies.

As Holmes was the founder and one of the key executives behind Theranos' downfall, she was found guilty of wire fraud and conspiracy. Since 2023, she has been serving an 11-year sentence at the Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas. Despite her life in prison, Holmes maintains her marriage to her husband Billy Evans, with whom she has two children.

Below are five facts about Holmes, from her childhood to her career.

Holmes was born in Washington, D.C. She and her family eventually moved to Houston, Texas, where she attended high school. While still in high school, a teenage Holmes attended a summer Mandarin program at Stanford University before eventually enrolling in a bachelor’s degree program.

At just 19 years old, Holmes founded Theranos, then known as Real-Time Cures. She was still studying at Stanford, pursuing her bachelor’s degree, where her professor, Dr. Phyllis Gardner, warned Holmes that her idea of providing diagnoses with just a finger prick for blood analysis wouldn’t work.

With the support of several scientists, venture capitalists, and politicians, including former Secretary of State George Shultz, Holmes dropped out of Stanford to focus on developing Theranos.

After raising $ 400 million in venture capital, Theranos eventually reached a peak valuation of $ 9 billion. Holmes' company even partnered with Walgreens to introduce blood collection centers in stores. As she managed to attract enough capital for the company, Holmes was recognized by Forbes as the youngest self-made female billionaire. Of course, everything changed when Holmes was found guilty and had to pay over $ 400 million in restitution to victims along with her ex-boyfriend Sunny Balwani.

During her meteoric rise to fame, Holmes' former baritone voice amazed both fans and critics. Many noted that she didn’t sound the same as before, before her time in the spotlight
