Elizabeth Moss recalled working on the tense set of the award-winning 1999 film «Girl, Interrupted», - with Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie. During an interview on SiriusXM’s «Unscripted with Kelly Ripa», - the star of «The Handmaid’s Tale», - 41-year-old actress, explained why she found Angelina, 48, «intimidating» to work with at the time.
«There were two camps. There was Winona Ryder’s camp and Angelina Jolie’s camp», - Elizabeth pointed out. «I was in Winona Ryder’s camp, and Angelina Jolie’s camp was really cool. They were really cool girls. I was so scared of Angelina Jolie’s camp. I didn’t think I would ever be in that camp. It was so cool. They were all cool girls».
She then recalled how the tension arose «off-camera, but based on what was on camera», - referring to the characters of Angelina and Winona. Angelina played Lisa Rowe, and Winona, 52, played Susanna Kaysen, who become enemies in the film’s plot.
Despite feeling uncomfortable at the time, Elizabeth acknowledged that Angelina is «charming» and has «communicated» with the Oscar winner in recent years.
«I've spoken to Angelina since then, and she’s charming, but at the time it was just incredibly intimate», - noted the star of «The Handmaid’s Tale». «I never brought it up, and I’m sure she wouldn’t understand what I’m talking about anyway. But I definitely wasn’t cool enough to be in her camp».
«Girl, Interrupted» follows Winona’s character, Susanna, after she experiences a nervous breakdown and overdose. She is sent to the Claymore psychiatric hospital, where she befriends other patients, including schizophrenic character Elizabeth, Polly «Torch» Clark. Susanna and Angelina’s character, Lisa, initially become friends, but Lisa is a manipulative sociopath who convinces Susanna to stop attending therapy and taking medication.
Elizabeth’s latest interview comes during a tense period in her career. She is not only pregnant and expecting her first child, but also promoting her new show on Hulu, «The Handmaid’s Tale». During an exclusive interview with Hollywood Life, the Hulu star hinted at her complex performance.
«I always wanted to do something in the spy genre, but this was like that times 100, because Imogen — so many different people», - she noted. «And the person you meet at the beginning is different from who you meet in 10 minutes, from who you meet in the second episode, and so on. For me, it was an opportunity to play 10 characters in one project»
