Elle King finally spoke out about her drunken performance at the Grand Ole Opry during Dolly Parton’s birthday celebration in January. The 34-year-old country singer admitted that she was «embarrassed» by her performance and the viral video that circulated during an appearance on the Dear Chelsea podcast with Chelsea Handler on Thursday, May 16. She also explained the situation and why she ended up on stage that night.
In January, Elle went viral after a video surfaced of her forgetting the lyrics to Dolly’s song «Marry Me» at a tribute concert for the 78-year-old country icon. Forgetting the words, Elle began swearing, and after the song she said, «Hi, my name is Elle King. I’m f**ked up». Following the performance, the Grand Ole Opry issued an apology for her performance on social media.
Elle shared that she made a «big mistake» by swearing on stage at the tribute show in the podcast. The singer of «Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home)» revealed that she had a tough day before the concert. «At that time I was going through something very heavy and traumatic in my life, and that day was very important to deal with what I was going through — and continue to go through — and I have serious PTSD», - she said.
Elle claimed that the main performer who was originally scheduled backed out of the show just a few hours before it started, and she was asked to take their place. She said she drank too much, and the show became a blur for her. «I had one shot too many and I just wasn’t in my body. I don’t remember it», - she said. «I was closed off. I just have flashes of it. I was completely, 100% disoriented. I just went into the dressing room, laid on the floor and just cried, 'What did I do?' And the next day it was everywhere».
Elle said she wrote handwritten apologies to Opry and Dolly, and said that the singer of «Jolene» called her afterwards. «She said very kind words to me and said, 'Well, Dolly’s not mad at you, why should the world be?' [She] made me laugh. That’s the kindness of women», - she said.
Ultimately, the singer apologized to all the audience members she disappointed. «To everyone who is asking for apologies from me, if you were there that night and I couldn’t say 'sorry' to you, I apologize», - she said.
Several weeks after the performance, Dolly also defended Elle in an interview with Extra. «She's been through a lot of struggles lately», - she said. «She just overdid it a little with the drinking. Let’s just forgive her and forget about it and move on, because she’s had it worse than anyone else»
