Billionaire uses his companies in response to a law aimed at protecting children from unwanted disclosure by their parents.

Technology mogul Elon Musk, 53, announced on Tuesday afternoon in a couple of posts on his social network that SpaceX will move its headquarters from Hawthorne to Starbase, Texas, and X will move its headquarters from San Francisco to the technological center of Austin.

Musk stated that the SAFETY Act, signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom, which will prohibit school districts from requiring teachers to inform parents if a child wants to identify as a different gender, was the «last straw».

«I made it clear to Governor Newsom about a year ago that laws of this kind will force families and companies to leave California to protect their children», - Musk wrote in another post on X.

In 2022, one of Musk’s children went to a California court to request recognition of her new name and gender, stating that she no longer wants to have any relationship with her famous and wealthy father «in any form». Musk told the Financial Times that his daughter’s decision was influenced by «neo-Marxists» in educational institutions. He has been heavily criticized at X for his positions on gender identity issues.

He continued in a separate post that he was also «tired of dodging drug addicts to get into a building and out of it», clearly referring to problems in the vicinity of X’s headquarters in the Mid-Market Street area of the city.

California State Senator Scott Wiener responded to the news by reposting one of Musk’s posts, writing: «California literally created you with taxpayer help and is the best place. Will this be a fake move like the fake 'move' of Tesla to Texas?»

But just because the company has its headquarters here doesn’t mean its CEO can decide whether LGBT Californians have civil rights.

If protecting the safety of LGBT children is too much for Elon, it says a lot more about him than about SF and California.

Musk has been leaning towards the Lone Star State for several years. In 2021, Musk announced that he would move Tesla’s headquarters from the Bay Area to Austin, Texas. In February, SpaceX applied to move its business registration from Delaware to Texas, after a Delaware state judge overturned a 2018 Tesla pay package supported by Musk, siding with a shareholder who challenged it as excessive.

Musk also stated in December 2020 that he had moved to Texas. However, his company established a foundation in this state, although it was somewhat unstable. Many jobs depend on it, and he continues to rely on the California market
