Eminem showed how far he has come in his sobriety journey in a simple Instagram post on Saturday, April 20. Marshall Mathers, 51, shared a photo of his Alcoholics Anonymous sobriety token, indicating that he had marked 16 years of sobriety. The token featured a design of a tree with a swirling pattern of the trunk and leaves. It also depicted a triangle as a symbol of AA and the number 16. The words «Unity», - «Service», - and «Recovery» surrounded the triangle.
Eminem did not add a comment to the post, allowing the token to speak for itself, but many of his fans and famous friends showed their support as he celebrated 16 years of sobriety. His longtime manager Paul Rosenberg left a supportive message for him. «Sweet 16. So proud of you», - he wrote.
Other fans left comments, talking about how far they have come in their own journeys of sobriety, just like Eminem. «This token is beautiful! I will get mine tomorrow!!! 5 years!!!» wrote one person. «Congratulations, Marshall. In May, I will have 8 years!» commented another fan.
Eminem has been sober since 2008. He has been very open about his drug addiction in his music and interviews. His first album released after becoming sober was «Relapse» in 2009, but he more candidly discussed his struggles with addiction in «Recovery» in 2010, which included songs like «Not Afraid», - «Going Through Changes», - and «Talkin' 2 Myself».
In recent years, Slim Shady has marked the anniversaries of his recovery by posting photos of his sobriety token on social media. When he celebrated 12 years of sobriety in 2020, he shared a photo of the token, writing: «A clean dozen, in the books! I’m not afraid».
With over a decade of sobriety under his belt, Eminem continues to release music that his fans still love. His latest release was «Music to be Murdered by» in 2020, but in early April, he teased his fans, joking that he would release a sequel to his debut album «Infinite»
