Eric Adams is currently facing legal issues after criminal charges were officially filed on Wednesday, September 25. The next day, on Thursday, September 26, the 64-year-old mayor of New York City faced a total of five charges, according to NBC News. In a video posted on X New York Post, Adams addressed the situation, stating: «My fellow New Yorkers, I believe the federal government intends to charge me with crimes. If so, these charges are completely false, based on lies, but they are not surprising».
While the Democratic mayor deals with these charges, he expressed his readiness to continue serving the «8.3 million New Yorkers» who elected him, according to NBC News.
On September 26, the charges were revealed as follows: «one charge of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, bribery of a federal program, and solicit donations for a campaign from foreign citizens; one charge of wire fraud; two charges of soliciting donations from foreign citizens; and one charge of bribery», - according to NBC News.
After the announcement of his charges, Adams was not immediately arrested. However, he addressed the situation in a video posted on New York Post on X, stating that he has become a «target». He added: «For months, leaks and rumors have been directed at me in an attempt to undermine my reputation and portray me as guilty».
If Adams is unable to continue his duties as mayor, the acting mayor will be public advocate Jumaane Williams. According to ABC 7, a representative for Williams made a statement regarding the charges, noting: «The mere announcement of these charges is extremely serious. As the facts are clarified, the Public Advocate will say more to the residents of New York City, at the moment he is focused on how best to restore trust, confidence, and stability in city government to New Yorkers». Williams, 48, previously served as a member of the New York City Council, representing the 45th district
