Eric Church denied rumors about his performance at the Stagecoach festival, which caused mixed reactions from the audience, on Friday, April 26. The 46-year-old country singer admitted that he had a different style of performance in mind than the audience expected, but he remained true to his decision to perform a stripped-down, gospel-inspired set at the country music festival.
For his final performance, Eric performed a number of songs, including cover versions of Leonard Cohen’s «Hallelujah», - several hymns, soul songs like «Stand By Me» and «People Get Ready», - as well as rap covers of Tupac’s «California Love» and Snoop Dogg’s «Gin and Juice». He was accompanied by a choir, and he performed against a backdrop of stained glass. He also performed stripped-down versions of his own songs, but his own band joined him at the end of his performance, closing it with his classic song «Springsteen».
While some people enjoyed the fact that the country star diversified his usual performance, the unexpected set caused some fans to leave and miss his performance. One fan filmed a video showing what appeared to be a mass exodus from the show. «We paid $ 600 to see the headlining artist perform, and people are leaving in droves», - they wrote. «He didn’t even stand up from his stool, and most of the songs are covers with a choir. This is not what we came for».
In response to the criticism, Eric released a statement supporting his decision, citing other influences including Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, and Bob Seger. «It was the toughest set I’ve ever tried to pull off. I’ve always found that going back to where it all started, to who Bob Seger loves, who Springsteen loves, who Willie Nelson loves, going back to the roots. And the root of all of this is still its purest form. And we don’t do that often. It felt good to go back, take a choir and do it», - he said through Variety.
He continued and showed that he is proud of taking risks, closer to what a new artist would do. «For me, there’s always been something about records, about performances, I’ve always been the one who said, 'let's do something really weird and unusual and risky.' Sometimes it doesn’t work, but that’s okay if you live on that edge, because that edge, that cutting edge, that’s where all the new guys are going to strive. So if you can always challenge yourself that way, it always cuts sharper than any other edge», - he said.
