Tension continues to escalate, raising concerns of a full-scale war in the region after Israel announced on Saturday that it had killed Hassan Nasrallah, the longtime leader of Hezbollah, in a powerful series of airstrikes that rocked Beirut on Friday evening. The Iran-backed militia later confirmed Nasrallah’s death.

On Tuesday, rockets were seen being fired over Israel. Smaller streaks of light were also observed, apparently coming from Israel’s air defense system, as the country tried to prevent an attack.

A White House official pointed to signs that Iran is preparing to launch ballistic missiles at Israel amid escalating tensions in the region. This comes after Israel’s chaotic attacks on the population of Lebanon using pagers. The pagers, used by hundreds of Hezbollah members, exploded almost simultaneously in different parts of Lebanon and Syria. This method, used over two consecutive days, claimed the lives of at least 12 people, including four young children, and injured thousands of others.

Yes. Iran claimed to have launched dozens of ballistic missiles at key military and security targets in Israel in response to the mass killing of residents of Gaza and Lebanon, as well as leaders and commanders of Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Revolutionary Guards Corps. The Revolutionary Guards Corps also warned that Israel would face «devastating» retaliation if it responded.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the killing of Nasrallah and a senior commander of the Revolutionary Guards in this attack «will not go unanswered». Araghchi said that the United States «facilitated this crime».

Sirens sounded in Israel, and explosions were heard in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv as residents rushed to bomb shelters late on Tuesday. However, Israeli military representative Daniel Hagari reported no casualties from the attack and stated that the army does not see «further threats in our airspace». In a video address, he reassured the public that it was safe to leave the shelters.

Emergency services in Israel reported that at least two people suffered minor injuries from shrapnel in the Tel Aviv area.

According to the Associated Press, over 40,000 Palestinians have died in the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, as reported by the territory’s health ministry on August 15, 2024. Israel’s offensive has also injured over 96,000 people and forced more than 85% of the population to leave their homes, according to the ministry controlled by Hamas
