Essence Cody announces pregnancy and will miss the season
Texas A&M women’s basketball forward Essence Cody announced her pregnancy, which will cause her to miss the 2026−27 season. She shared this news in a statement posted on social media on October 12.

Cody, 22, revealed that she is expecting her first child in January and will be preparing for the arrival. In her statement, she noted that motherhood is the greatest blessing in her life and expressed gratitude to her family, coaches, and teammates for their support.

Last season, Texas A&M finished the championship with a record of 14−13, losing in the first round of the WBIT to McNeese State. Essence Cody transferred to Texas A&M from Alabama in April, where she was a starter for three years, averaging 11.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks per game in her junior season.

Cody also mentioned that she will be watching the game from the sidelines this season and plans to support the team from the bench. She expressed hope that she will return to the court next season with new knowledge and a child.

Head coach Joni Taylor supported Cody, stating that she is proud of her and confident that she will be a great mother. Taylor emphasized that the team will do everything possible to ensure Cody has a safe and healthy pregnancy.

The season for Texas A&M will begin on November 2 with a home game against the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
