On January 29, 2025, the FDA elevated the recall level of Frito-Lay chips to «Class I». Find out what this means below!
Frito-Lay chips were recalled due to the presence of undeclared dairy ingredients. However, the announcement only applies to 13-ounce bags. Over 6,300 «party size» bags of Frito-Lay chips were recalled due to the risk of a life-threatening allergic reaction.
The FDA classified the risk as «Class I», which is the highest level of risk warning, stating: «[There is] a reasonable probability that the use or exposure to the violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death».
The 13-ounce «party size» bags of Frito-Lay chips were only recalled in the states of Oregon and Washington, and they were first delivered to these states in November 2024. The recall was announced in December 2024. On January 27, 2025, the FDA updated the recall to «Class I», indicating that the product is in the highest risk category. The chips have the following production codes: 6462307xx or 6463307xx.
The undeclared dairy ingredients in the product could have been caused by several factors, such as cross-contamination, labeling issues, or deficiencies in mass production at factories, according to Forbes.
Do not consume the chips. Either discard the product or contact Frito-Lay consumer relations at 1−800−352−4477 from Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm Central Time, according to USA TODAY.
This is not the first recall for Frito-Lays. In November 2023, Frito-Lays recalled over 16,000 6 ¼-ounce bags due to the same serious safety issue of undeclared dairy ingredients in their «Off the Eaten Path Chickpea Veggie Crisps». The investigation began following a consumer complaint, according to Pop Culture. These chips were introduced on September 13 and were distributed to many states across the country, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Symptoms of a milk allergy include hives, itching in the mouth or lips, throat or tongue swelling, vomiting, shortness of breath, or wheezing
