The Food and Drug Administration has officially banned the use of this synthetic food coloring, but it has been used in thousands of popular candies, products, medicines, and other items. According to the FDA, this ingredient was found in two studies that caused cancer in «male laboratory rats exposed to high levels of FD&C Red No. 3 due to the mechanism of the war hormone». The ban is based on the Delaney Clause, adopted in 1960 as an amendment to the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, prohibiting the use of food or color additives found to cause cancer in humans or animals.
The FDA noted that the way Red No. 3 causes cancer in rats «does not occur in humans».
The additive was previously banned in cosmetics in 1990.
