All federal employees in the United States received an email on January 28, 2025, detailing the option to leave with a buyout or stay in their job, which is not guaranteed long-term. This limbo situation has left many employees unsure of their next step. Find out what is happening below.
According to The Hill, there are over 2.1 million federal employees in the United States. The average federal employee stays in their job for 12 years, and nearly 20% live in the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia.
In an attempt to reduce the government workforce, Donald Trump is offering federal employees the option to take a buyout; however, employees must make a decision by February 6. If they choose to accept the offer, they will receive eight months' salary, their benefits, and will be exempt from the requirement to return to offices until September 30, 2025. The only employees not eligible for the buyout are military personnel, US Postal Service employees, and any positions related to national security and immigration control, according to various sources.
All federal employees received a letter on January 28, 2025, detailing the buyout. The email states that employees must respond with the word «resign» to accept the deal. Employees who accept the offer will be able to apply for government positions in the future.
The memorandum also states that federal employees who choose to stay will have «4 pillars» to focus on, including returning to full-time office work, increasing productivity culture, more efficient and flexible workflow, and improved behavior standards.
In the long term, Trump warned federal employees that there may be «reductions» in the future if they do not accept the buyout. The buyout is not mandatory for Trump, but if layoffs are «likely» ahead, employees may have no choice but to accept the deal
