Fernando Mendoza: The Path to Championship and Family Support
22 january 2026 в 20:13
Fernando Mendoza has become one of the most talked-about figures in college sports, not only due to his successes on the field but also because of the powerful personal story behind them. The star of the Indiana Hoosiers recently led his team to a national championship on January 19, 2026, and won the prestigious Heisman Trophy—achievements he emotionally shared with his family, especially with his mother, Elsa Mendoza. Elsa, who uses a wheelchair during games and post-match celebrations, has drawn attention to her health and the journey she has undergone.
After the championship victory, Elsa told The Sporting Tribune: «It's so overwhelming. I don’t even know what I’m feeling. It’s like numbness. Every hug with him, I know it sounds cliché, but it’s so special because I know how much he wanted this and how hard he worked to achieve it. That hug means the world to me».
Below, you can learn more about Fernando and his family, including his mother.
Fernando’s mother, Elsa, uses a wheelchair as she has been suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS) for nearly two decades—a chronic autoimmune disease that can significantly affect mobility. She was diagnosed when Fernando and his brothers were young, and she hid her condition for a long time before its effects became more noticeable. Her health deteriorated after contracting COVID-19, which ultimately made walking difficult.
In December 2025, Fernando told PEOPLE magazine that his mom is his reason for the «why», - just a week before he won the 2025 Heisman Trophy. «It's that unwavering optimism she gives me that really helps me get through each day», - shared Fernando, who works with the National MS Society on behalf of his mother. «She's so special to me. And seeing her is such an inspiration for me. I’m so lucky to have someone like her in my life».
Fernando comes from a deeply supportive and close-knit family that has played a central role in his life and career. He is the eldest of three sons of Elsa and Fernando Mendoza Sr., and his younger brothers, Alberto and Max, have always been by his side throughout his football journey.
His father is an emergency pediatrician in Miami who previously played high school football and competed in rowing at the college level. Fernando and his younger brother Alberto even took the field together in Indiana, where Alberto was his backup quarterback during the Hoosiers' championship run
