In the context of deep divisions of opinion regarding gun use in the United States, screenwriter and director Aaron Davidman dives into the debate with his new film «American Solider». The film stars Joshua Close, Gilbert Owuor, and Joanne Kelly. The plot follows veteran Slinger (Close) as he returns home and faces challenges related to gun violence, as well as the pressing need for safety in its use.
The film premiered on April 17, 2026, at Cinema Village in New York City, and film enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to learn more about Davidman’s latest project.
Slinger returns home, recovering from an injury, and realizes that the struggle is not over. Confronted with the psychological and physical consequences of war, he also observes how quickly gun violence impacts the everyday lives of citizens in the U.S.
As mentioned, Close stars as Slinger, Owuor plays his friend and fellow soldier Auggie, and Kelly portrays a veteran and former CST Athena. The film also features Jamir Vega as Emmett, Cooper Hackebe as Dominic, Hudson Brooks as John, Dylan Kussman as Pastor Clay, Lorinda Hawkins as Grace, and Ivan Anthony as Young Slinger.
In an exclusive interview with Hollywood Life at the premiere in New York, Close explained how the film’s plot contributes to the discussion of gun safety laws in America.
«I think it enters the conversation very empathetically… in a truly evolved way», - said Joshua, noting that the film «doesn't condemn but also raises questions in a country where gun safety laws are quite loose».
«It's clear that the discourse needs to improve», - added the Wayward graduate.
Joanne emphasized her experience working on the film, stating that «most of us will never serve [in the military], but learning something about it and really understanding a bit more about such experiences strengthens us as a society and, frankly, humanity as a whole».
Gilbert noted that «American Solider» has the power to unite «different sides of the argument». «I learned so much more about the subject just by hearing from people who watched it than during all the time spent on set», - he added.
As for Davidman, the screenwriter and director said he is «trying to humanize» this issue through his film, inviting viewers to «engage with how violence [affects] people».
Currently, «American Solider» can be seen in select theaters. If you are in New York, you can watch it at Cinema Village in Manhattan. The film’s premiere in Los Angeles, California, will take place on April 23, 2026, at Laemmle NoHo
