Edward Berger’s film «Conclave» sparked controversy with its portrayal of Catholics. However, this did not stop it from receiving a total of eight Oscar nominations, which were announced on Thursday, January 23, 2025. The films with the most nominations were only Emilia Peres (13), «Villain» (10), and «Brutal» (10). The religious thriller was nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor (Ralph Fiennes), Best Supporting Actress (Isabella Rossellini), Costume Design, Editing (Nick Emerson), Production Design, Best Original Score (Volker Bertelmann), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Peter Straughan). The 2025 Oscars will take place on Sunday, March 2, 2025, and the ceremony will be broadcast live on ABC and streamed on Hulu.

Below, you will learn how to prepare for watching «Conclave» before the Oscar ceremony.

Fiennes plays Cardinal Lawrence, alongside Stanley Tucci as Cardinal Bellini, Sergio Castellitto as Cardinal Tedesco, Carlos Dies as Cardinal Benitez, Lucian Msamati as Cardinal Adeyemi, and John Lithgow as Cardinal Tremblay. Rossellini balances the heavy male cast in the role of Sister Agnes.

«Conclave» is an adaptation of Robert Harris’s bestseller of the same name. The action takes place in the Vatican, and the intriguing plot focuses on a secret, behind-closed-doors process in which the College of Cardinals discusses the selection of a new Pope after the death of the previous one.

«Conclave unfolds over tense 72 hours, depicting an exciting confrontation between tradition, politics, and faith», - according to Deadline. «With brilliant supporting performances — especially from Isabella Rossellini as the silent but strong Sister Agnes — the film focuses on the all-too-human aspects of the sacred procedure, reflecting on the role of religion in a rapidly changing world».

Fiennes explained in an interview in October 2024 that, in his opinion, the film raises a question. «I think the film raises a question: who is the best person? Who is the right person to hold this amazing position of spiritual leadership? And what we want is for them to be spiritually, to have a great spiritual foundation as individuals», - he said at the time on TODAY. «Throughout the film, I think we understand that this person ends up there».

If you hope to watch the film from the comfort of your own home, you’re in luck. «Conclave» is currently available for streaming on Peacock. You can also buy or rent the film on Prime Video, Apple TV+, Fandango at Home, or Google Play Movies. If you want to watch it on the big screen, it will return to theaters before the Oscars.
