The new marketing art for the recently released film «Civil War» is generating interest. On Wednesday, April 17, A24 released a series of new posters promoting their latest film.
Each image hinted at post-apocalyptic scenes in major cities in the United States, ravaged by conflict. From Las Vegas to Chicago, no city seemed safe from the Civil War. «America the Beautiful», - read the caption on Instagram. «#CivilWarMovie».
But soon after the images appeared online, some movie fans expressed disappointment with the creative direction.
«Why do you continue to publish these ridiculous posters using AI? Hire a real artist», - wrote one user in the comments. Another follower added: «This marketing campaign repels me. AI art is theft and aesthetically awful».
Others couldn’t help but wonder if the campaign was creating false expectations for viewers about what they would actually see on the big screen. As one user wrote: «Spoiler: none of this is in the movie».
Hollywood Life magazine reached out to A24 for a comment on the images.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, «Civil War» is A24's most expensive production to date, costing around $ 50 million. A source close to the film told the publication that the images help to portray the national impact of the film’s fictional war. «These are AI images inspired by the film», - explained the source. «The whole film is a big 'what if', so we wanted to continue that thought on social media — powerful images of iconic monuments with this dystopian realism».
«Civil War» follows a team of war journalists who race against time to reach Washington before rebel factions descend on the White House. The film, written and directed by Alex Garland, earned $ 25.7 million at the box office for its opening weekend — a record for the studio.
Before working on «Civil War», - Alex was known for his directorial debut in 2014, «Ex Machina», - a film warning about the dangers of AI.
Ignoring any controversial moments, actress Kirsten Dunst hopes that the film will spark many conversations and bring people together.
«The media creates this polarization and perpetuates it, but this film really shows you: 'Don't do this'», - she told The Hollywood Reporter this month. «So I think it will make people talk to each other and have conversations, and for me, it’s really about treating each other as human beings. The film has a lot of humanity and a lot of hope as well»
