«Hillbilly Elegy» is based on J.D.'s 2016 memoir «Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis». The film tells the story of the politician as he recalls his childhood in Ohio. In his childhood, J.D. and his sister Lindsay witnessed their mother Bev’s drug addiction, creating a dysfunctional and violent environment for the children.
The story also explores J.D.'s motivation for academic success and building his political career.

During an interview with Deadline at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, Ron was asked about how the film is being received in light of the presidential elections.
«Well, we didn’t talk much about politics when making the film because I was interested in his childhood and survival story. That’s what we mainly focused on», - Ron said in a recent interview. «However, based on the conversations we had at the time, I must say I am very surprised and disappointed by many of the statements I read and hear».
The «statements» Ron refers to were J.D.'s well-known comments during Donald Trump’s campaign. His most controversial comment was from a 2021 television interview when he described some Democrats as «childless cat ladies». He also said that the future of «Democrats is controlled by people without children», - pointing to Vice President Kamala Harris and US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Pete currently has two children with his husband Chasten Buttigieg, and Kamala has stepchildren Ella and Cole with her husband Doug Emhoff.
During the Deadline interview, the producer added that «people change» and recalled a time when he knew J.D.
«When we talked back then, when I knew him, he wasn’t involved in politics and didn’t claim to be particularly interested in it», - Ron said. «That was then. I think it’s important to acknowledge what’s happening today and to vote. So, that’s my answer. It’s not really about a film made five or six years ago. It’s about what we see, hear, feel now, and responsibly vote, whatever that may be. We must participate. That’s my answer».
