Sadness can lead to discoveries, and unexpected events can lead to love. The film «Voice Messages for Isabel», - starring Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson, tells the story of a woman named Jill, who, in order to cope with the loss of her late sister, leaves voice messages on her phone number, which has been passed on to a man named Wes. Unbeknownst to Jill, Wes listens to her messages and falls in love with her.

Given the uniqueness of the plot, written by director and actress Leah McKendrick, fans are wondering if the film is based on real events.

Find out if «Voice Messages for Isabel» is based on a true story.

The film is available for streaming on Netflix. It premiered on the platform on June 19, 2026.

The cast includes Deutch as Jill, Robinson as Wes, Harry Shum Jr. as Andy, Lucas Hedges as Arthur, Ciara Bravo as Isabel, and Nick Offerman as boss Bastien.

McKendrick also appears in the film as Brida.

Yes, «Voice Messages for Isabel» is based on real events, McKendrick revealed in an interview with People in June 2026. She recalled watching a comedy set by her roommate about how her father would leave her 20-minute voice messages about mundane daily matters.

«And then the next comedian comes on stage and says, 'How great that your dad calls you. My dad hasn’t called me in three years.' And everyone goes, 'Oh.' And she adds, 'He's dead,'» McKendrick recounted, adding that she «was the only one who laughed».

«And then thoughts started swirling in my head, and I thought how funny it is that a girl keeps waiting for her dad to call her back», - explained the multifaceted director. «And then I thought, 'If my dad dies, I won’t wait for him to call me back because he doesn’t call me back now.' And then I thought that if my sister died, I would wait for her to call me back. But then I realized that if my sister died, I would just keep calling her».

McKendrick’s sister then moved to New York for school, and the writer-director began leaving her «long, convoluted voice messages» on various topics, such as a bad date or «how hard it is to break into Hollywood and how this city doesn’t want me».

«I just expressed everything I was thinking», - she said. «And what a terrible story it would be if someone ever heard my most unfiltered version. But you would know that if someone falls in love with this unfiltered version, it would be real»
