In an interview with TV Insider, showrunners Michael Foley and Justin V. Lo talked about how they came to the final fate of Joe. «As we prepared for the first season, we started delving into discussions and found that we were on the same page… Joe will get his deserved retribution», - explained Foley. «We will not redeem Joe. Joe will not escape responsibility».
The fifth and final season of the series «You» premiered on April 24, 2025, with all 10 episodes released simultaneously on Netflix.
Penn Badgley returns in the lead role, once again portraying the obsessed and manipulative Joe as his past finally catches up with him. Charlotte Ritchie reprises her role as Kate Lockwood-Goldberg, Joe’s wife and powerful CEO of Lockwood Corporation.
The cast is joined by Madeline Brewer as Bronte, a mysterious playwright who gets caught in Joe’s web. Anna Camp plays two roles — Reagan and Maddie Lockwood, ambitious twin sisters of Kate, while Griffin Matthews plays Teddy Lockwood, Kate’s stepbrother and Joe’s brother-in-law. Nava Mau joins as Detective Marques, a sharp and persistent investigator focused on uncovering Joe’s crimes.
One notable absence is Ellie Alves, an ambitious film director played by Jenna Ortega. Fans hoping for her return were disappointed as Ortega was unable to reprise her role due to scheduling conflicts with the series «Wednesday».
In the series finale, Joe Goldberg’s past finally catches up with him. After a confrontation with Bronte, who survives and exposes his crimes, Joe is arrested and sentenced to life in prison for multiple murders, including those of Beck, Love Quinn, Benji, and Peach. He is sentenced to life in prison, where he continues to shift blame onto society instead of taking responsibility.
«So in the end, my punishment is even worse than I imagined. Loneliness, oh God. Loneliness», - Joe said in voiceover. «No hope of being held. Knowing it’s forever. It’s unfair. All this responsibility lies on me. Aren’t we all just products of our environment? Hurt people hurt people. I never had a chance».
He added in the final scene: «Maybe we have a problem as a society. Maybe we need to fix what’s broken in us. Maybe the problem isn’t in me. Maybe it’s in you».
Meanwhile, those left in his wake find closure. Kate shifts her focus to art and creates a stable life for Joe’s son, Henry. Marianne finds success as an artist, and Nadya returns to teaching after her wrongful imprisonment in the fourth season
