The second season of House of the Dragon was a highly anticipated event, but fans describe it as an anticlimax. Many HBO viewers expressed their disappointment with the finale, wondering why the season suddenly ended without the expected bloody battle. One viewer may have expressed it best, writing on Twitter: «Mixed feelings about the House of the Dragon finale. On one hand, it was one of my favorite episodes of the series so far. On the other hand, there was so much tension throughout the season that not delivering it after 2+ years of waiting doesn’t really work for me».
Others even called it the «worst» finale they had ever seen on television. «House of the Dragon is just a show where everything is constantly ready to happen, but nothing really happens», - added another user.
The entire second season was supposed to be a three-episode arc, nothing more and nothing less.
And the finale was the worst finale I’ve seen. #HBO #HouseOfTheDragon #boring

Hollywood Life broke down what happened in the finale of the second season below. (Warning: spoilers ahead)
Rhaenyra (played by Emma D’Arcy) and Alicent (Olivia Cooke) conclude the season finale with an intense exchange. Although it’s only a verbal moment, the characters' energy provides enough drama for fans to sit on the edge of their seats.
The characters meet at the beginning of the second season, but in the finale Alicent visits Rhaenyra to possibly open the gates of King’s Landing for the Blacks. Not only that, but she also reluctantly agrees for her son, Aegon, to lose his head.
The battle doesn’t end because it doesn’t even begin! Episode 8 of the second season ended right before the Battle at the Gullet was supposed to start. The anticipated clash was supposed to feature all the dragons and drama for fans to enjoy.
Director Geeta Vasant Patel told Variety about how the finale was created.
«I didn’t know if it would be a battle or something else», - she told the publication. «I probably expected a battle, just as a fan. Then, when I read the script, I was pleasantly surprised and happy because, in my opinion, we rely too much on battles. I think the most interesting thing in this episode is the relationships. It’s the dialogues, plot twists, the relationships between Daemon and Rhaenyra, and Rhaenyra and Alicent. For me, it was quite exciting to focus on the drama. I love it. I was interested in diving into it. I definitely felt challenged, if people are expecting a big battle, how will this compete with it?»
