The state of Florida is preparing for the execution of Curtis Wilkie Bisley, a 77-year-old man convicted of murdering 62-year-old Carolyn Monfort with a hammer. The execution is scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, and Bisley will become the 29th inmate executed in the U.S. this year, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.
Bisley will be the 16th inmate executed in Florida in 2026, and the seventh prisoner over the age of 70 to have his death sentence carried out. He was sentenced to death for the murder of Monfort in 1995, when he beat her to death with a hammer in her home in Dundee, as reported by the Associated Press.
Bisley’s execution will be carried out using lethal injection, which is set to begin at 6:00 PM local time. He is expected to receive three different drugs. Last week, the Florida Supreme Court denied an appeal claiming that the execution would be cruel and unusual, citing his age and cognitive condition.
After killing Monfort, Bisley allegedly stole her car and drove to Alabama, where he began living under a fictitious name and working for an electrical company. He was arrested in that state and received a death sentence in 1998. Monfort was an acquaintance of Bisley, for whom he had done painting and cleaning work in the apartments she managed.
After her body was found in a laundromat a few days after the murder, the forensic examination determined that her head had been struck with a hammer between 15 and 20 times. Bisley and his attorneys maintain his innocence. In the rejected appeal, his legal team noted that the jury did not unanimously recommend the death sentence.
Bisley has one final appeal pending before the U.S. Supreme Court. His scheduled execution will take place one day before the execution of Christa Pike, the only woman on death row in Tennessee, who was also convicted of murder in 1995. If her execution occurs on September 30, she will become the first woman executed in the state in over 200 years.
