Tyler Ulrich, a football player from Southern Nazarene University, passed away on October 15 at the age of 21 after sustaining an injury during a game. This was reported by the university administration.
Ulrich, a sophomore linebacker, died five days after a match in which his team, the Crimson Storm, lost to Ouachita Baptist University. The university did not specify the exact injury that led to his death. Tyler’s father, Mark Ulrich, wrote on Facebook that the family is grateful for the support and prayers but with a heavy heart announces that «the Lord called Tyler home at 11:13 AM». He added that Tyler lived a life full of faith and passion and will always be remembered.
The university’s athletic department also released a statement expressing condolences and noting that the loss is deeply felt on campus. The team’s head coach, Dustin Hada, described Tyler as «a man of God, a model of quiet strength and dedication». The university president, Dr. Keith Newman, added that Tyler was surrounded by the love and support of family and friends.
Tyler was from Azle, Texas, and enrolled at Southern Nazarene University in 2024 after being named a second-team all-district player in high school. He was also involved in powerlifting and studied finance. This season, he played in all six games for the team, recording 39 tackles.
In light of the tragedy, a crowdfunding campaign was organized to assist Tyler’s family, raising over $ 22,000 of the planned $ 26,000. The team’s next game against Southwestern Oklahoma University, scheduled for October 17, has been canceled.
