In California, a mother and stepfather have been arrested after their eight-year-old daughter, named Aurora, died from an asthma attack. According to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, the couple, Gabriel Hanson and Jacob Randolph, allegedly waited eight hours before seeking medical help while the girl was in a state of «serious medical distress».
The incident occurred on May 13 at their home, where Aurora and her six siblings lived in unsanitary conditions, including a cockroach infestation and the presence of garbage. Prosecutors stated that when the parents finally called for help, «it was too late». Aurora died four days later from «brain oxygen deprivation due to severe asthma with acute lung injury against a background of rhinovirus/enterovirus infection», - according to the medical examiner’s report.
The girl’s death has been classified as homicide, with medical neglect as a contributing factor. Prosecutors noted that Hanson and Randolph were aware of the unsafe living conditions for their children, as they had previously received warnings from medical and social workers. In response to the emergency call, six other children, aged between two months and 17 years, were placed into the custody of the county’s child protective services.
The investigation revealed that the parents failed to properly maintain Aurora’s asthma equipment, including a respiratory mask that was found to have cockroaches inside. In February 2025, when a relative brought Aurora to the hospital with breathing problems, a bug fell from her shoe, and a cockroach was found crawling on her. The girl told medical staff that «the bugs are just crawling on me».
Prosecutors also reported that the children’s living conditions had been dangerous at least since 2019, with previous reports from child protective services and police mentioning severe cockroach infestations. Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen called for accountability from the local child protection agency, stating that «there are serious questions about how this child and her siblings could have lived in such dangerous unsanitary conditions for so long».
The investigation also led to sexual assault charges against Gabriel’s brother, Jonathan Hanson, who lived in the home and was linked to the alleged abuse of Gabriel’s stepdaughter. It is unclear whether Gabriel, Jonathan, or Randolph have attorneys. All three appeared in court for a hearing this Tuesday. Gabriel and Randolph were released on their own recognizance, while Jonathan remained in custody without bail. All three are awaiting their next court hearing on November 20.
