Harry Styles honored the memory of Liam Payne by performing a new song at a concert at Madison Square Garden on October 16, exactly two years after the death of his former One Direction bandmate.
During the performance, 32-year-old Styles told the audience that he wrote the song about Payne. He expressed that he felt incredibly happy to be performing in New York and emphasized the significance of this place to him. Styles added, «Two years ago, I lost one of my friends».
According to reports, Payne passed away in October 2024 after falling from the third-floor balcony of the CasaSur Palermo hotel in Buenos Aires. He was 31 years old. Following his death, Styles and other One Direction members released a joint statement expressing their grief and acknowledging that they would remember Payne forever.
Styles also shared his feelings on Instagram, stating that he was «truly devastated» by Payne’s death and that he always sought to make people happy. In an interview with Zane Lowe in March of this year, he noted that losing a friend who was so much like him was particularly difficult.
