Lyle Menendez and Erik Menendez have been in prison since 1996 for the murder of their parents, Jose Menendez and Kitty Menendez. The story of the brothers and their legal processes became relevant again after the release of Ryan Murphy’s film «Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story». After the end of their last trial, Lyle and Erik were separated and sent to different prisons. So, where are they now?

Lyle and Erik are currently serving their prison sentences at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, California. After their conviction in 1996, they were initially separated and sent to different prisons. Lyle was incarcerated at the Mule Creek State Prison in Ione, California, while Erik spent time at both Folsom State Prison and Pleasant Valley State Prison in California.

In 2018, the Menendez brothers were placed at RJD, but in different blocks. Later that same year, Lyle, reportedly, was transferred to the same block as his brother, and they were together again for the first time in over 20 years. Since then, the brothers have been behind bars together.

During their separate incarcerations, the Menendez brothers married their wives. Lyle married his first wife, Anna Eriksson, in 1996, shortly before he and Erik were sentenced. Anna and Lyle later divorced, and he married his second wife, Rebecca Sneed, in 2003. As for Erik, he married his wife, Tammi Saccoman, in 1999.

Erik and Lyle were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Therefore, they are expected to spend the rest of their lives behind bars.

However, the brothers' defense attorney, Cliff Gardner, is trying to secure their release from prison, Forbes reports. A letter that surfaced in recent years may support Lyle and Erik’s claim that they killed their parents in self-defense. Additionally, musician Roy Rossello claimed that Jose sexually abused him when he was a teenager. As a result, Cliff presented both the letter and Roy’s testimony as new evidence to argue that Lyle and Erik’s sentences should be overturned.

Shortly before the release of the film «Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story» on Netflix, the Menendez brothers appeared in the trailer for the upcoming documentary. The documentary will be released on Netflix on October 7, 2024
