Gabby Douglas defends her USA gymnastics team after recent comments made by replacement, Mykayla Skinner.
The 28-year-old gymnast, who has been competing in the Olympics since 2012 and has numerous titles, was unable to participate in the competitions taking place in Paris due to an ankle injury. «I regret to inform you that due to a leg injury during training, I will not be able to continue my journey in 2024. This may be the end of this chapter, but not the end of my story in gymnastics», - she noted on Instagram.
She recalled to People: «It was very bittersweet… And it happened while performing my signature element, which I do on the beam».
Although she will not be at the competitions, her former partner Simone Biles will represent the country alongside Suni Lee, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, and Mykayla Skinner. Their hard work and perseverance are evident in every drop of sweat they leave on the mat, except for what former Olympic champion Mykayla Skinner expressed in her recent comments.
«Besides Simone, I feel like the talent and depth is not the same as before… Just notice that, I mean, obviously, many girls are not working as hard», - she said in her video on Youtube, which was later removed.
Shortly after, she received criticism from several people and shared through her Instagram stories: «I feel like many of you misinterpreted or misunderstood what I meant or said… Many of the things I talked about didn’t always refer to the current team, because I love and support all the girls who made it, and I am proud of them».
After hearing her comments, Gabby spoke about it in a conversation with E! News. «Honestly, if you have your own way of doing things, listen to your body… If you don’t need hours of training or a stricter coach, and it works for you, why not structure everything around how your mind works, how your body works?» she said. «I truly believe that you can’t put everyone in the same category… It’s just my opinion, everyone is different»
