Gene Hackman was only seen in a few rare appearances during the remaining part of his life. The star of «The Royal Tenenbaums» ended his iconic film career at the age of 74 and passed away at the age of 95 in February 2025. He and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead along with their dog in their home in New Mexico. Although authorities confirmed that there were no suspicions of foul play, the public still had countless questions about the shocking death of the couple. Gene left behind three children, whom he shared with his ex-wife, Fay Maltese.

Born in Southern California on January 30, 1930, Gene immediately made a splash in one of his early screen roles. Playing Buck Barrow in the 1967 film «Bonnie and Clyde», - Gene was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Four years later, he won the top prize, playing detective Jimmy «Popeye» Doyle in the film «The French Connection». Gene was nominated two more times, once in 1988 for «Mississippi Burning» and again in 1992 for «Unforgiven», - which became his second Oscar win.

In 2008, Gene confirmed his retirement and even mentioned how it would take for him to return to the set. «I don’t know. If I could do it at home, maybe, without their interference and just one or two people», - he told GQ magazine. Later, he told the publication that he hoped to be remembered as «a decent actor».

Having taken his last film role almost two decades ago, starring in the 2004 comedy «Welcome to Mooseport» alongside Christine Baranski, Gene definitely focused on his personal life, including family. The veteran actor was married to his first wife, Fay, from 1956 until their divorce in 1986. They welcomed three children during their relationship: Christopher, Elizabeth, and Leslie Ann. Later, Gene married classical pianist Betsy in 1991.

Learn all about Gene’s children below.

Gene and Fay, who passed away in 2017, welcomed their first child, a son named Christopher Allen, in January 1960. Although he didn’t pursue acting, Christopher followed in his father’s footsteps in Hollywood, working behind the scenes. At one point he had a career as a camera operator and camera assistant, working on films such as the 1986 «Hoosiers», - where Gene had a starring role, and the 1987 «Made in U.S.A». He also directed the documentary «Chris & Don: A Love Story» (2007).

As one of the greatest actors of his generation, Gene was often away from home and missed some moments of his children’s childhood, which, as he told GQ magazine, was regrettable. «I lost touch with my son in terms of advice from the very beginning. Perhaps it was because I was so much on the road, shooting movies on location when he was at an age when he needed support and guidance», - he explained, «It was very difficult for me to leave for three months and then come home and start commanding him».

Elizabeth Jean was welcomed into the world by Gene and Fay in August 1962. Her younger sister, Leslie Ann, was born four years later, in October 1966. Both daughters are very private, and little is known about them publicly
