The Northern Lights are mainly visible closer to the poles, but a geomagnetic storm can change the rules of the game. Thanks to a recent storm, people around the world were able to see a stunning view of the Northern Lights. From the northern states of the USA to Europe and Asia, skywatchers witnessed a beautiful display of pink and green lights.

A geomagnetic storm is a rare phenomenon, but this is not the first time it has occurred in America. People saw the Northern Lights in May 2024 as a result of another storm.

Find out how long the Northern Lights will be visible this time below.

The Northern Lights were visible across the northern hemisphere worldwide on Thursday, October 10. New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Sacramento, and other areas of the USA had a clear view of the Northern Lights. However, the American states with the best views were Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

Celebrities shared their best photos of the Northern Lights on social media on October 10. Kevin Jonas couldn’t believe what he was seeing, captioning his Instagram post: «How am I seeing this right now?»

There is a possibility to see the Northern Lights again on Friday, October 11. However, the view may not be as clear as it was on Thursday, October 10, for all residents of the USA. The further north you can go, the more chances you have to see the pink and green hues again. Northern New York and parts of Canada should once again see a stunning view of the Northern Lights.

At the time of publication, the forecast for geomagnetic storm is only predicted until Friday, October 11.

According to the Space Weather Prediction Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the best time to observe the Northern Lights is between 10:00 PM and 2:00 AM. But many Americans saw the lights between 8:00—9:00 PM on Thursday, October 10. So it depends on the location, but the best chance for a clear view of the Northern Lights is after sunset
