George Clooney praised President Joe Biden for his decision to not participate in the 2024 presidential elections. Promoting his latest film «The Wolves» at the Venice International Film Festival, the 63-year-old actor was asked about an article he wrote for The New York Times earlier this summer, in which he urged the 81-year-old Democrat to refrain from running in the elections.
After being asked about the article, George admitted: «You know, I’ve never had to answer this question. So, I think I’ll do it here», - according to a video on Instagram posted by The Hollywood Reporter on Monday, September 2. «The one who should be praised is the president who made the most selfless act anyone has made since George Washington», - added George.
After receiving applause, the «Descendants» star noted that «all the machinations that got us here won’t be remembered», - pointing out that they «shouldn't be». «What should be remembered is the selfless act of a man who did the hardest thing», - continued George, acknowledging that «letting go of power is very difficult» in his response. «You know, we’ve seen it all over the world, and when someone says, 'I think there’s a better way forward,' they get all the credit, and that’s true».
Concluding his response, the «Up in the Air» actor said that he is «very proud» of the current state of America, adding: «I think we’re all very excited about the future».
George’s comments came almost two months after the publication of his article titled «I Love Joe Biden, but We Need a New Candidate» in The New York Times on July 10. In it, the co-founder of Casamigos called the president a «hero» and wrote that he «saved democracy in 2020». However, George added in the essay: «We need him to do it again in 2024», - urging Joe to refrain from running in the elections.
«The fight he can’t win is the fight against time», - wrote George. «None of us can. It’s devastating to say this, but Joe Biden, whom I was with three weeks ago at a fundraiser, wasn’t the Joe 'Big F***ing Deal' Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same person we all saw in the debates».
A few weeks after the publication of his article, Joe announced that he would not be running for re-election. He endorsed Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in the fight against Republican candidate Donald Trump
