Star of the show «Bringing Up Bates», - Gil Bates, suffered a heart attack just days after his son Ward’s wedding to Caibry Bates. This was reported by his wife, Kelly Jo Bates, on Instagram on September 30.
According to Kelly Jo, Gil had been experiencing unusual sensations in his chest for two weeks, lasting about 30 seconds and sometimes accompanied by jaw pain. Although he did not feel severe pain, he sensed that something was wrong. Due to a «busy schedule» and uncertainty regarding the seriousness of his condition, Gil was hesitant to go to the hospital.
On Monday evening, after finishing work trimming trees and mowing several areas, he decided to go to the emergency room, thinking he would get a blood test and be sent home. However, he was quickly taken to a room and informed that he had suffered a mild heart attack. He later underwent coronary catheterization to diagnose a blockage.
Kelly Jo noted that the procedure lasted four hours, as extensive work was needed on the LAD artery, known as the «widowmaker». Gil had an 80 percent blockage in this artery and significant calcium buildup. A standard balloon could not open it, so Shockwave (lithotripsy) was used, followed by the placement of a 24 mm stent. A 48 mm stent was then placed in the RCA artery, where the heart attack occurred, with a 95 percent blockage.
Kelly Jo also reported that there was a third artery with a 45−50% blockage that did not require a stent. Doctors said that Gil was a «ticking time bomb» and was very close to a serious heart attack. Fortunately, the situation was corrected in time, and they were able to return home.
Gil will begin «cardiac therapy» and will need to make dietary and medication changes. Kelly Jo expressed gratitude for the support and prayers from family, friends, and medical staff. Gil’s health deteriorated just days after his son Ward, 23, married Caibry, 20, for the second time following a private ceremony in May.
