With the 2024 Olympics in Paris just a few days away, gold medalist and gymnast Gabby Douglas recalled her time returning to training after an ankle injury.
The 28-year-old athlete shared that her journey to the Olympics this time around has come to an end. Unfortunately, Gabby sustained an ankle injury during training her signature move, which prevented her from continuing to compete. In June, she wrote on Instagram: «Wow, what a journey. First and foremost, I want to say that I am forever grateful for your support, grace, and love. It truly touched my heart».
«I regret to inform you that due to a foot injury during training, I will not be able to continue my journey in 2024. This may be the end of this chapter, but not the end of my story in gymnastics».
Gabby has not returned to the Olympics since winning gold in Rio in 2016. «I thought I couldn’t. I always thought about coming back to gymnastics, but I was like, I don’t know, because they always said, 'You have to be 16. You have to be fresh.' I was called old at my second Olympics!» she told E! News.
Speaking to reporters, she admitted that she wants to return to the 2028 Olympics, which will be held in Los Angeles, California. «I will say, I am very grateful for returning to the gym, mastering new elements, remembering old elements, just experiencing and enduring the competitive atmosphere», - she said.
She added: «coming back and having the right nutrition, the right structure, the right schedule, I thought, 'Oh, maybe I can do this… So it’s really fun to play with different elements. I never did several elements that I performed on this journey».
Although she will not be going to the Olympics in Paris, she will be cheering for her USA gymnastics team, which includes her former teammate Simone Biles, as well as Sunisa Lee, Jade Carey, MyKayla Skinner, and Jordan Chiles
