Gypsy Rose Blanchard explained how she feels on the anniversary of her mother’s death, Claudine «Dee Dee» Blanchard, in an interview with E! News on Sunday, June 9. When asked about her feelings on the anniversary of her mother’s murder, 32-year-old Gypsy explained that she has a lot of complex emotions and said that it is often a difficult day for her.
Dee Dee was killed on June 10, 2015. She was killed by Gypsy’s then-boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn. Nicholas was found guilty of first-degree murder and armed criminal action, and was sentenced to life in prison. Gypsy was found guilty of second-degree murder and sentenced to 10 years in prison. She was released after eight years in December 2023. Gypsy said that as the anniversary approaches each year, she is very unhappy. «When June 9 comes around every year, I am in a very depressive state. It’s a difficult day for me», - she told E! News.
Gypsy continued, explaining how she honors her mother’s memory on the anniversary of her death. «Sometimes I listen to music, listen to some of her favorite songs, and allow myself time to grieve — and I do it alone because I don’t want to be judged», - she said.
Nearly ten years after her mother’s murder, Gypsy said that she has «a level of forgiveness» towards Dee Dee, and hopes that her mother feels the same. «I hope wherever she is — I’m a spiritual person, I’m a religious person. So I hope she’s in Heaven, and I hope she can look at me and see me as a woman who grew out of her circumstances», - she said. «So, I hope there is mutual forgiveness».
Leading up to Mother’s Day, Gypsy spoke about her mother in a very heartfelt video on social media. «What I choose to feel on Mother’s Day, regarding my own mother, is the best of her. I think of the good times. I think of her not as what she did to me, but I think of her as a person», - she said
