The verdict was delivered more than two and a half years after the release of the Netflix documentary series «Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich», - which focused on Epstein, who also faced allegations of sex trafficking minors. Many of his alleged victims accused Maxwell of actively participating and aiding, with at least one claiming that she threatened them after they reported the abuse to law enforcement. Maxwell’s lawyer did not respond to a request for comment from HollywoodLife at the time of the 2022 verdict.

After her infamous lover was found dead in his prison cell in New York in August 2019, the British former socialite disappeared from public view until she was finally arrested in Bedford, New Hampshire, in July 2020. During her trial, which began on December 6, 2021, she pleaded not guilty to six federal charges, including sex trafficking of minors, transporting a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, three related conspiracy charges, and enticing a minor to engage in illegal sexual acts. She was acquitted of one charge: enticing a minor to travel for illegal sexual activity.

In 2024, Maxwell appealed her conviction, arguing that she should be released in accordance with the terms of the 2008 deal between Epstein and federal prosecutors in Florida. Under the agreement, prosecutors agreed not to bring charges against his alleged accomplices. However, her appeal was rejected by an American court.

Here’s what else you need to know about her:

Born in France and raised in the UK, Maxwell is the youngest of nine children. Educated at Oxford, the party socialite dated members of the royal family and world leaders, including Prince Andrew, US Presidents Bill Clinton and Donald Trump, and First Lady Melania Trump.

Maxwell’s father, Robert Maxwell, once owned the New York Daily News and Mirror Group Newspapers in Britain. He died in November 1991, falling from his yacht «Lady Ghislaine» off the Canary Islands. The official cause of his death was a heart attack and accidental drowning, although conspiracy theorists believe he either committed suicide or was murdered, according to The Guardian. After his death, Robert was accused of looting the Mirror Group pension funds of around £460 million.

Reports say Maxwell met Epstein after moving to New York in the 1990s following her father’s death. According to The Guardian, «Having lost much of her family’s wealth, status, and influence, Maxwell found something of a replacement in her relationship with Epstein».

In court documents filed in the US Virgin Islands in 2020, Maxwell claimed that she «had no involvement or knowledge of Epstein’s alleged misconduct».

A civil lawsuit against the late financier’s estate also sought reimbursement for her legal expenses and personal security costs. She claimed that she was allegedly «constantly threatened with her life and safety», - requiring her to hire personal security guards and «find safe housing».

In 2019, Maxwell was photographed at an In-N-Out Burger restaurant in Los Angeles shortly after Epstein’s death, and the image was published by the New York Post.

She was arrested in July 2020. In April 2021, her lawyer released a photo of her with a bruise under her eye, awaiting trial in the federal prison in Brooklyn. Maxwell told her lawyers that she did not know how she got the bruise, according to the New York Daily News
