Glen Powell talked about the trajectory of his acting career in a new interview, revealing that he decided to move back from Hollywood to his home state: Texas. The 35-year-old actor explained what led him to leave the glamour of Los Angeles, speaking with The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published on Wednesday, May 22.
Encouraged by advice from his fellow Texan Matthew McConaughey, Glen told the publication: «He says, 'Hollywood is the Matrix, dude. You get sucked in and it’s all fake.' He says, 'And then I go to Austin and unplug. That’s where it’s real. That’s my friends, that’s my family, my actions matter there.' And he’s right. If you’re here, you’re living in the Matrix all the time, there’s no separation of these worlds. And for me, especially as my parents are getting older and my nieces and nephews are growing up, I want that separation of worlds».
Glen faced difficulties when starting his acting career. Moving to Los Angeles, the «Scream Queens» graduate didn’t land roles consistently until later in his career. At the beginning of his journey, he moved from place to place in Los Angeles, and he hit a low point when he wasn’t getting cast for new roles.
«I just remember coming back to that garage after that, thinking, 'This is where you’re going to live your whole life, failure,'» Glen recalled. «I really had to look at myself in the mirror and say, 'I know you love movies, and I think you have good instincts, but you might not be an actor.'»
Nevertheless, Glen continued to audition and collaborate with as many artists as possible, wrote his own scripts, and gradually landed more roles. After being cast in the film «Top Gun: Maverick», - and then in «Any Other Night», - Glen quickly reached movie star status.
«The funniest thing about that moment», - he explained to the publication. «I worked long and hard, putting it all together and just trying to get them to a point where people started to care».
Now that he can be more selective in choosing his movie roles, Glen dropped a bombshell: he turned down a role in the upcoming film «Jurassic World».
«Jurassic World is one of my favorite movies. It’s what I wanted to do my whole life», - he said, before explaining his reason for rejecting the role. «I'm not in this movie because after reading the script, I immediately realized that my presence in this film wouldn’t help. And the script is great. The film will be a bomb. But that’s not the point. It’s about choosing where you make the audience happy and where you make yourself happy»
